This is a very peculiar amplifier with it's corresponding pre amp, which is not a true preamp in that it shares the power amps power source.

I would say most of the sound characteristic is given by the preamp, the power amp being quite transparent, perhaps with a little bass boost. Its sound is unlike anything else, very mellow and smooth, perhaps with a gentle v curve, less pronounced in the highs. If you are looking for an analytical amplifier that will show you all the minute details on a track look elsewhere.

This guy's strength lay elsewhere. Its very very musical especially under 1W. It can go loud but my favourite is late night sessions in a dim lit room, volume down and a glass of 18yo single malt. Pure bliss. Works well with all types of music but you do have to use the tone controls. Luckily these don't seem to degrade the music that much. Time and time again I wanted to sell it as I have a newer and much more expensive amp now but just cannot part with its sound signature.

Scored it an 8 out of Did I mention the VU meters are absolutely gorgeous and the bass goes extremely low, not talking beats bass but proper deep deep bass. I have had this amplifier - the M2 version for best part of 18 years. I know people are divided about it's sound signature - but I really like it. Many amps have come and gone in my collection but I cannot part with this because of the great looks and sound signature.

I also have a valve amplifier- and that is far superior in sound quality - but the SESM2 is still engaging in other ways. I have it paired with Monitor Bronze BX6 speakers and it drives them with ease.
