I know windows said not many were using it If you look at all the forums and sites dedicated to keeping it going and Hack it to work in Windows you will see there remain a lot of people interested.
Any decrease in recent postsis because people stopped lookingbut, like me are still using it. Most of "us" are not asking for it to even be updated just work. They had it working in Windows 8 before killing it. It would not take much to get it to work in Windows Especially since people had work arounds that worked before they actually removed a dependency during a recent Windows Update.
My "work-around" was to downgrade 2 computers to Windows 7 and buy a older "High End" Dell that had windows 7. I will keep Windows 7 on these computers forever--unless Windows Media Center in migrated to Windows I have successful set up Emby and Plex they are just not as good, not even close. For that it works great. My Family had started using Windows media Center since windows 7 was released and continued to use until the PC crashed recently and had to buy a new PC.
I was going to down grade although after thinking, Windows 7 no longer will get support and windows 8 well be that way soon too. Windows Media Center is very easy to use that the whole family could use it easily. Just grab the remote and record a favorite show with a click of a button. It's very easy to setup as well, unlike any of the alternatives.
If I was guessing. I don't think the developers of any of the alternative software took the concept of making their programs family friendly towards all age groups. It's just a shame that a person has to down grade windows just to receive that part of the software that could easily be sold as an APP.
If you want to do something well done, take painful Windows 10 out of the way and reinstall Windows 7. Even if Microsoft no longer releases updates for Windows 7, hoping that many will switch to Windows 10, go easy I saw a few posts on how to hack it, but it does not seem reliable.
Gary DZ. May 7, 25 WMC is dead , let's move away from that old app. Jan 4, WMC just works. Then I just needed to set up WMC and done. Aug 12, 4, 1, It needs 3rd party utils to cover WMC's 'standard' functions, plus its fair to complex for a normal PC user to setup and run.
Which is a shame as its a great project and makes a brilliant Media Center front end. What some are liking, others dislike! That said, I wouldn't recommend any of them. I just use what I like and what's doing what I want. And to discuss about that is totally useless because it will mainly end up in hated outcome!

Even though there are 3rd party options nothing really replaces WMC for ease of use and flexibility to port that content all over the home with Xbox 's.
